An update on the relief effort from Mekong Circle Treasurer Bik Marquez:
After searching for the right organization to channel your donation to the victims of typhoons in the Philippines, we are recommending that we choose ABS-CBN Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization based in San Mateo County, California, through their Sagip Kapamilya (Family Rescue) program.
You may learn more about ABS-CBN Foundation if you visit their website at www.abs-cbnfoundation.org or www.sagipkapamilya.com.
We are recommending ABS-CBN Foundation since 100% of your donation is given to the Philippine victims. Other nonprofit organization charges from 7 percent to 23 percent (maximum allowed by law).
Let me know if you have other ideas as soon as possible. We must deliver our help now since another typhoon is raging in the Philippines.
Thank you.
Bik Marquez
Treasurer

Continuing the Call for Aid
As is evident from this recent New York Times story, the call for aid to the Philippines following recent typhoons is as loud as ever:
After Storms, Stagnant Floodwaters Bring Disease in Philippines
MANILA — More than a week after Typhoon Ketsana devastated the Philippines, followed by a second damaging storm, large areas of Manila and nearby provinces remain flooded, and survivors — some gathered in evacuation centers and others marooned in their homes — face a host of other problems, including disease and ruined crops. (New York Times)
The government has appealed for donations of clothes, blankets, food and water for many thousands who have sought shelter in evacuation centers.
Mekong Circle can do its part.
If you would like to assist, you may send checks payable to "Mekong Circle" to our Treasurer Bik Marquez at 1200 Bayhill Suite 119, San Bruno, California 94066 (Tel. 650 589 3522). Please note on the face of the check that the donation is for "Typhoon Relief."
We will pool the money and transmit it to our Philippine Mekong Circle affiliate which will forward it to the appropriate receivers. Your donations, as usual, will qualify as a tax deduction for charitable purposes.
Please do it now. This is an emergency.

Typhoon Aid
To all:
Since our last plea for aid to the victims of Typhoon Ondoy, there has been a second typhoon, Parma, to strike the Philippines.
Donations also are being sought to help in that effort.
See the information at the bottom of the Ondoy post (click here) for information on how to donate.

Help For Typhoon Ondoy Victims
To all:
By now, you must have read and seen the devastation wrought by Ondoy when it swept into Central Luzon last Friday, Sept 25. The statistics make it the worst natural calamity to hit the country in three decades:
-- 80 percent of metro Manila was flooded, sweeping flood waters reaching second floor homes
-- 246 Filipinos have died (more numbers to come from the provinces)
-- 1.9 million people affected
-- 180,000 tons of paddy field rice destroyed
-- 375,000 Manila residents abandoned their homes
-- economic costs estimated at $100 million
The government has appealed for donations of clothes, blankets, food and water for many thousands who have sought shelter in evacuation centers. And in true Bayanihan tradition, 24-hour fundraising TV telethons are raising cash and goods from companies and Filipinos for the last three days. For a look at the plight of the victims, go to YouTube or the New York Times slide show (197 photos).
Mekong Circle can do its part, as it did when we raised donations for the Leyte mudslide victims. Send your checks payable to Mekong Circle to our Treasurer Bik Marquez at 1200 Bayhill Suite 119, San Bruno, California 94066 (Tel. 650 589 3522). Please note on the face of the check that the donation is for "Typhoon Ondoy Relief."
